Purpose of the Meeting

As part of its commitment to confront the burden of cardiovascular diseases and to achieve health for all in the region of the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has been working to keep the momentum of the World Health Day 2013 (WHD13) –this year dedicated to highlighted the theme of hypertension--, throughout the rest of the year by creating synergies with other campaigns such as Wellness Week, an annual event that was developed in 2011 as a regional social movement on healthy living to modify risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and promote prevention.  Within the context of Wellness Week, the Colombian Ministry of Health has established the Healthy Lifestyles Week to increase awareness and local action.

Within the context of the WHD13 and Healthy Lifestyles Week, the Alliance, PAHO, and the Colombian Ministry of Health with support from the Healthy Americas Foundation and an educational grant from the Medtronic Foundation, will convene a joint leadership meeting to share successful community-based practices throughout the Americas. Sessions will focus on presentations of key data and trends and community based models for action for three of the risk factors for CVDs identified by PAHO, namely: (1) reducing tobacco use, (2) promoting healthy diet, and (3) increasing physical activity, as well as self-management prevention and control practices at the community level that support patients with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.  Each session will end with discussion and identification of key priorities for action and collaboration in the Americas for achieving priorities for prevention and control of CVDs.

Meeting Objectives
  • Understand challenges faced by residents of the Americas in reducing risk factors for CVDs.
  • Increase knowledge base about community-based models for self-management, prevention and control of CVDs and available tools and resources.
  • Identify key opportunities for collaboration in reducing risk factors and the prevention and control of CVDs in the Americas.
